Then He Hands You Nine Words For The Moment A Mood Starts To Rise…
We’ll come to what this can change in your days in a moment. First, here is the pause itself, word for word as Steve gives it to you on the track:
“Whenever you feel a mood rising, perhaps irritation, worry or a heavy feeling, you pause. You put your feet flat on the floor, and you feel the ground beneath you, solid and steady.
You take one slow breath in, and an even slower breath out, letting the breath out be longer than the breath in.
And you say quietly to yourself, ‘This is a wave, and I am the keel.’
Then, from that calm, steady place, you choose what to do next.”
Dr. Steve G. Jones, on the Balance Mood track
That is the whole of the Keel Pause, and the first time you read it, it may sound almost too simple to matter.
It’s fair to be skeptical. You could say those nine words a hundred times while you’re calm and still snap at the next curt email, because reading a sentence on a web page changes very little.
What makes the difference is where the pause gets planted. On the track you rehearse it in deep relaxation, out on the calm water. Then Steve asks you to picture a moment that once would have knocked you off balance, perhaps a disappointing message, a rushed morning or a sharp word, and as he falls silent you see yourself noticing the wave early, feeling the floor, breathing out slowly and choosing your next step with a clear head.
When he speaks again, it’s to say, “The wave comes, the wave passes, and you come back to level.”
